UK MoD Application Process

UK military personnel who would like to apply for one of the courses at ETPS will need to fill in the application form at the bottom of the Defence Internet Notice (DIN). Your application must also include:

  • A recent passport-sized photograph or jpeg image
  • A paragraph of around 150-200 words detailing why you wish to be a test pilot or flight test engineer.

The DIN can be found on the publications page of the Defence website.

Send the completed application to Carolyn Garratt, School Administrator by email at or by post to:

Empire Test Pilots' School
MoD Boscombe Down

The deadline for applications is 1st May.

The Selection Board

If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to attend a two-day Selection Board held in the first week of July. This will involve:

  • A one hour maths exam (you will need to bring a calculator and pencil)
  • A one hour tutors’ board involving interviews with the fixed wing or rotary wing Flight Commander, Flight Dynamics Tutor and Aerosystems Tutor
  • The main board, which will last 1.5 hours – involving interviews with the Chief Test Pilot, the Commanding Officer at ETPS, an engineering specialist and Officer Commanding of the relevant squadron.

We also have supplementary boards if they are needed, for example if a candidate is on an operational tour when the Selection Board is due to take place.

If you have any questions about the application or selection process, please call Carolyn Garratt on 01980 664317.
